Recognizing Tech Support Scams
5 min read · Updated June 19, 2026
Legitimate companies like Microsoft or Apple do not proactively call you about a virus, nor do they display pop-ups asking you to call a phone number.
Scammers often use scary, full-screen browser pop-ups with alarms or countdown timers to pressure you into calling.
Never grant remote access to your computer to someone who contacted you first, and never read a one-time verification code to a caller.
If you're worried about a real infection, close the browser (or restart the computer) and run a scan using security software you installed yourself.
